Creating archives

You can use Archiver to create archives in a number of popular formats.

To create an archive:

Step 1

Drag in the files you want to archive.

Step 2

If you dragged in only one file (not a folder) choose Create Archive.

Step 3

Type the filename of your archive in the Name box.

Step 4

From the Archive pop-up menu choose the archive format. If you are unsure which format to choose, see below for guidelines.

Step 5

Click Create.

Which Archive format to select in Step 4 depends on whether you would rather make the archive as small as possible, or to make it easier to open on other platforms. To make the archive as small as possible, choose 7z as it offers the strongest compression. To make it easy to open the archive on other platforms such as Windows, choose Zip. The formats tar.gz, tgz, tar.bz2 and tbz are popular on Linux and Unix.

You can prevent others from opening your archives by encrypting them. After Step 3, from the Archive pop-up menu choose either “zip” or “7z”. Then select “Use Password” and enter your password twice. Choosing “7z” from the Archive pop-up menu offers better protection through stronger encryption, while “zip” is easier to open on other platforms, as mentioned above.
